Artist Statement

I believe that everything in nature has something to say to us. My strong interest in painting the landscape has continued to be a moment of self discovery. The mystery and beauty of a landscape combined with the infusion of color can create an interesting painting. The surreal atmospheric landscape allows one to find a sense of familiarity which leads to escapism. In a world of so much chaos, one can find peace, comfort, and solitude in a landscape that takes you on a journey with nature. My latest interest has been the wax mono-prints. The mono-prints have allowed me the opportunity to experiment with color, space, and form. I use paraffin wax and printing ink to create a more abstract version of a landscape. Then I create a ghost print which allows me to further abstract the painting. The mono print called “A Pastel of Color” is one of my favorite ghost prints. It was selected to show in the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. I had the fortune of learning this technique from John T. Scott, of New Orleans, the artist who created this printing process. To further expand this technique, I use oils on canvas to create paintings based upon the vibrant colors of the wax mono-prints. It further allows me to explore color, light, texture, and shape while creating an imaginary place. I can create a blue tree in a forest of magenta grass which conveys a mood for the viewer’s imagination, while transforming the appearance of the real world.

I have shown the landscapes in The Museum of Science and Industry “Creativity” Exhibition, in Chicago, IL. I was selected the past 3 years to be apart of the national juried exhibition. I have also shown in the State Capitol of Georgia, in the Governor’s exhibit. Dillard University, The Augusta Museum of Art, have also exhibited my work. My international travels, to Trinidad, Paris, France and London, have played a part in my self discovery through the landscapes. Taking inspiration from these visually interesting places, I return home inspired to create art work that expresses my personal feelings about nature. I plan to continue on this journey to create art. As an artist I truly enjoy the beauty of a landscape and the aesthetic experience it creates.
