Digital art became an obsession to combat the depression from having cancer of the neck in 1996 and then a stem transplant for multiple myeloma in 1998. He took  original photography and through the computer was able to create original art that was sold all over the southeast including Serenity Gallery in Bay St. Louis, Miss., The Ohr Museum of Art in Biloxi, Miss. and Galleria Veronese in New Orleans, La.  Also, during that period he did a two man show at the Swiss Hotel in Atlanta, Ga. with his artist brother; Ford W. Smith.

David’s cancer stayed in remission until late 2003 and has undergone treatments twice since that point. In early 2003 when his cancer returned, David, at the urging of his wife and artist/writer sister, Sylvia, started  painting in acrylics. After a year or so he found his style…Abstract. Recently, his art was on display at Berkshire Gallery of Roswell, Ga. He’s is currently represented by Yoder Gallery in Woodstock, Ga.,  Lola Gallery in Roswell, Ga., Galleria Veronese in New Orleans, LA.  and has a show coming in April 2007 at Sabra Gallery in East Atlanta.

David’s attitude is: “I’ve had four bouts with cancer, starting when I was 6 months old and I don’t intend for it to beat me!” Art has given him a purpose along with his wife Marsha of 31 years and their two children Jason (27) finishing his masters at UGA and
Angela (20) in her 3rd year at Reinhardt College.
